Piano Tuning & Piano Regulation

Why have your piano tuned?

Regular tuning and maintenance of the piano is extremely important for retaining sound quality and prolonging the life span of the instrument.

Having your piano tuned regularly can prevent serious damage to your instrument. The three main reasons your piano goes out of tune are regular playing, changes in humidity levels, and moving the piano.

If you play your piano frequently it is more likely to go out of tune faster. The more a string is struck and the harder it is struck the more likely that the tuning pin will move slightly. This increases slack in the string and it

falls flat. As humidity levels rise and fall, the wood in the piano expands or shrinks. These changes affect the tuning and the regulation of the piano. It is important to ensure that the correct amount of string tension is maintained, so that expensive neighbouring parts work smoothly and aren't damaged. For more on how humidity affects the piano click here. Moving a piano may cause the tuning pins to shift slightly, the soundboard to sit in a different position, and a change in relative humidity (if it is moving to a different location, or room). All of these factors will affect the stability of the tuning.

Having your piano tuned regularly ensures pitch stability. If you have your piano tuned frequently (2-3 times per year) it will hold its pitch much better and will sound great for longer periods of time.

What is piano regulation and why is it important?

Piano regulation is the process in which the mechanics in the piano action are adjusted, so that each key plays properly and has the same response as the next. Proper piano regulation is also essential for maintaining good piano tone and touch.

If your piano has malfunctioning notes; such as sticking keys, double-striking (hammer hits the strings multiple times when depressed once), damper issues (notes either keep ringing after released or sound muted), or any other technical problems; you're piano likely needs to be regulated. Our technician is well trained in all aspects of piano regulation and will find a solution for all of your piano's technical issues.
